Stefanos Kouratzis (b. Athens, Greece) is a visual storyteller, photographer and writer based
in Cyprus, working primarily in black and white on themes of place, memory, displacement
and lived history. His work rests on the conviction that the gaze is not innocent.
Over the years, he has collaborated with local and international media organisations including AFP, Reuters, Associated Press, Xinhua, France24, Arte (France) and BBC Radio. Has covered major stories in hostile zones such as the Lebanon War of 2006, the operation “Iraqi Freedom” (embedded on a USS aircraft carrier), the Gaza Strip, and the Bam City earthquake in Iran.
His photographic monograph “Ammochostos – The Algos of Nostos” is held in the collections of MoMA Library, the Academy of Athens Library, the Cyprus Library and the Severios Library.
His work has been shown in Cyprus and internationally, including the 16th Venice Biennale of Architecture as part of the Cyprus Pavilion, SPEL, the State Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Cypriot Art in Nicosia, Le Corbusie’s Unité d’habitation in Marseille, the National Austrian Library in Vienna and the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki.
He is currently Artistic Director of the Limassol Photography Festival (LiPhoFe) and teaches Photography at Aigaia School of Fine Arts. He also writes the weekly column Οπτικοί Μονόλογοι (Visual Monologues) for Φιλελεύθερος, and his articles on Photography and journalism have been published internationally.
